Breaking Clouds

Acrylic Painting titled Breaking Clouds

“The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious. And why shouldn’t it be? – it is the same the angels breathe.” Mark Twain, “Roughing It”

“Breaking Clouds” is a painting from the “Kiss the Sky” invitational exhibit at Summit Art Space for the celebration of the reopening of the Akron Art Museum in 2007. I created this acrylic painting from photos taken while traveling in Illinois. The cloud patterns fascinated me. The size is 36 x 48 and is acrylic on canvas with mixed media using Japanese rice papers.

David’s Sky

Acrylic Painting titled David's Sky

“The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.” Pablo Picasso

“David’s Sky” was inspired by a friend’s encouragement and query if I would ever create art again. My sky paintings had touched David in the past, and his question in May 2013, was the impetus for my return to art. I was very disillusioned with the “job” I had and was longing to return to what moved my soul….Lack of courage kept me from changing until David’s prompting question.

When I started this acrylic painting, I found myself creating a breakthrough painting that illuminated the clearing of the sky after a storm at sunset. The symbolism of closing one door and opening another was so apparent to me. I thought it was fitting that I would name this painting, “David’s Sky.”

The painting is now in David’s collection, a gift purchased by David’s wife, my friend Karen.

Storm Clearing

Acrylic Painting titled Storm Clearing

“Clouds on clouds, in volumes driven, Curtain round the vault of heaven.” Thomas Love Peacock

As the storm clears, the sunset casts reflections on the water. To me, sunsets are calming, restful and so incredibly beautiful with their unexpected range in color palette.

Sunrise: A New Beginning

Acrylic Painting titled Sunrise:A new Beginning

“I count myself lucky, having long ago won a lottery paid to me in seven sunrises a week for life.” Robert Brault

Sunrises give the promise to begin again, no matter what has happened the day before. I am grateful each day for new beginnings and happy to be back creating art. What new beginnings are waiting for you?

Beyond the Horizon

Acrylic Painting titled A Beyond the Horizon

“A cloud does not know why it moves in just such a direction and at such a speed… It feels an impulsion… this si the place to go now. But the sky knows the reasons and the patterns behind all clouds, and you will know, too, when you life yourself high enough to see beyond horizons.” Richard Bach

Fast moving clouds tinted by a setting sun, caught my eye and were the inspiration for this painting.

Clouds Resting on Hills

Acrylic Painting titled Clouds Resting on Hills

“When scattered clouds are resting on the bosoms of hills, it seems as if one might climb into the heavenly region, earth being so intermixed with sky, and gradually transformed into it.” Nathaniel Hawthorne

While traveling in Amish country, it looked like the hills were kissed by the clouds. What a beautiful summer day that reminded me of childhood lazy days watching clouds pass overhead.
