Claude Monet, (1840-1926), was a founder of French impressionist painting. His painting “Impression, Sunrise,” gave the movement its name. I love impressionism for its intense interest in how color is affected by atmospheric conditions. Monet was a very forward-looking artist that helped usher in the modern movements in art.

One of my favorite pieces of his work is the massive three-panel “Water Lilies.”  The Cleveland Art Museum owns the left panel of the triptych, shown above.  All three panels will be together again at the Cleveland Art Museum as the centerpiece of a blockbuster exhibition planned for the museum’s centennial celebration in 2016. The exhibit will include 75 – 100 additional pieces for this monumental centennial celebration.

Paul Gauguin, (1848-1903), was a French post-Impressionist artist who used expressive color and bold flat areas in his compositions. He was influenced by folk art and Japanese prints. As a former printmaker, I loved to study his paintings that were influenced by Japanese printmakers.

This painting, “The Call”, was created in 1902, and is in the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
